Smith, who is suspended for the Panthers’ first two regular-season games after he punched teammate Ken Lucas in a fight Aug. 1, was hurt after he caught a 19-yard pass from Matt Moore in the first quarter, taking a helmet-to-helmet blow from Colts defensive back Antoine Bethea.
Smith was among several players who missed Monday morning’s practice. Others included tight end Gary Barnidge (gluteal strain), receiver D.J. Hackett (foot), defensive tackle Ian Scott (knee), safety Chris Harris (upper leg), cornerback Chris Gamble (hamstring) and tight end Dante Rosario (hamstring).
Lucas, who had surgery on his broken nose last week, took part in light workouts on the sidelines during the morning practice. Linebacker Jon Beason and defensive tackle Damione Lewis, who both missed the Indianapolis game with injuries, were back at practice Monday morning.
